TAKE A KID FISHING
The annual "Take a Kid Fishing" celebration was held at Assateague Island State Park on June 14th. AMSA was there to instruct children the basics of surf fishing, which included bait cutting, rigging, casting and even catching fish and returning the fish safely to the ocean.
The event was a great success again this year with 40-50 kids participating. In addition to surf fishing, they enjoyed the artifact displays, soap carving and an Assateague animal display. The children that were there for the event had an opportunity to enjoy a drink and hot dog from the AMSA cook trailer. As always, the best hot dogs on the planet were thanks to Warren & Rose Ellen Owens and Morris & Margie Avery.
There was a tie for first place with 13" kingfish between Courtney Swearengen and Samuel Coates, both winning a tackle box full of gear from the Ocean-Atlantic fishing pier. There was a tie for second place with 12" kingfish between Caleb Welsh and Wrenna Fine, both winning a hat from Malibus and four tickets to a Shorebirds game.
Thanks to all those who volunteered their time to help the kids including, our AMSA President Bill Justice, Ron & Michelle Humphress, Doug Jones, John Welch, Matt Wilkins, Jeff Thomas, Wayne Anders, Ron & Mina Engle and Mike & Natalie Layton. Also, thank you to the Junior Members that helped Erica Anders, Allison Anders and Caleb Welch.
